In the Beginning

Prior to the formal legal incorporation of Eagleswood Township in 1874, the small towns of West Creek and Staffordville that make up the township already experience a long and storied history.

The area was originally settled by a Mr. Gervas Pharo. Arriving in America with his parents in 1678, Pharo inherited land in nearby Springfield upon the death of his father in 1688. After his marriage to Elizabeth Willets in 1701, Gervas sold the land, moving to the previously unsettled area now known as West Creek. He purchased property in West Creek from either Dr. Willam Cox or William Penn (the records are not completely clear), both of whom had received 12,000 acres each from the King of England in 1690. Pharo built his 2-story clapboard frame-house there on West Street in 1705 where remnants of it still stand today.

In fact, quite a few examples of the early settlers’ homes still stand in Eagleswood Township. The area featured fertile land, an abundance of game and fish, and a safe natural harbor for the sailing ships that traveled between the East Coast ports. Many of the ships’ captains chose the town of West Creek as an ideal place to reside, building many fine homes which have stood the test of time.
